One Step

Writer: Elizabeth MayElizabeth May

This week has been a whirlwind of productivity and progress. As the purchase of my first commercial real estate property closes, my new non-profit is gearing up. It has been several weeks of late nights, early mornings, and a lot of hard work for my entire team. While it has been challenging and exhausting, I have enjoyed the ride and have been thrilled to see how it is coming together. I am honored to have a team of amazing friends that have risen to the challenge of assisting me with getting the non-profit going in a very short period of time. We have made connections and enlisted an impressive group of men and women who are dedicated to making a difference.

I have been part of more than 18 startups in the last ten years. While most of them are successfully operating there are a few that were a challenge to get going, hard work to run, and fizzled out for several reasons. Reflecting on why these businesses failed while others succeeded I noticed a few interesting things. The most important being a unified leadership team, ownership for mistakes and failures, and all parties working with the same level of passion to achieve the goal.

Seeing my friends and coworkers coming together to manifest our shared vision of helping others has been empowering and inspiring. Each day I am amazed as our group has grown and just how quickly we can begin to make a difference by all working together with passion and focus. I am looking forward to sharing more with you but for now whatever your goal, no matter how large or small remember that “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” – Lao Tzu
